Exploring Cultures, Expanding Horizons: How Travel Enriches Our Professional Lives

I have been traveling in Europe.  I love to explore different countries, different people and different places.  This time we’ve been in Germany and Amsterdam.   We’ve had a sold dose of history along with beautiful sightseeing, fun experiences and trying new food.

What has struck me this trip is the culture differences.  Little nuances that make a place stand out and show us who we are.  But it also has given me time to think about new ideas based on what I am observing.  A cleaner space, more direct speaking, flexibility with structure, etc.

It got me thinking: how can visiting other cultures help us in our careers and business?  Her are some ways this experience is shaping my view of my work:

Learning from Different Cultures: On this trip I’ve been noticing how much we can learn just by being in a new place. Different cultures have different ways of doing things, and that can teach us a lot—about them, and about ourselves.

Trying New Things Builds Confidence: When we travel or step into new cultures, we face new challenges. We may not know the language, the rules, or even what to eat! But figuring it out helps us grow stronger. We learn how to adjust, be patient, and stay calm even when things feel uncomfortable. That’s something we can take back with us into work and life.

We Get Better at Talking and Listening: Every culture has its own way of speaking and showing respect. Being in a new place makes you pay closer attention. You listen more, and you think before you speak. You become a better communicator—and that helps with teams, clients, and relationships of all kinds.

Creativity Comes from New Experiences: When you’re in a totally different environment, your brain wakes up. You see new ways to solve problems. You feel inspired. It pushes you to think differently. That’s why travel (and learning about new people) can be a secret to creativity.

We Make More Connections: Meeting people from different cultures builds your network. It opens doors to new ideas, friendships, even career opportunities. A global view helps you grow both personally and professionally.

One Surprising Thing: Being Present: One thing that really stood out to me in Germany: people don’t walk around staring at their phones. They look up. They notice their surroundings. They’re present. I’ve started doing it, too—and wow, what a difference. More peace, more focus, more connection.

Traveling and learning about other cultures helps us grow in ways we don’t always expect. It builds our confidence, helps us connect with others, sparks creativity, and makes us better leaders. And sometimes, it even reminds us to put the phone down and enjoy the moment.

I invite you to take my Leadership Assessment at www.thesinhagroup.net to understand your skill sets and develop some new intentions.
