I find “grit” fascinating. Where does it come from? How do we get it and harness it? Why is it important in today’s world?
Grit is defined as courage and resolve; strength of character. I have seen so many of my clients show up to life’s moments with grit, and I am always impressed to see it appear.
One client has moved into a new phase of life after enduring hardships in childhood and early adulthood. She is in a new space of freedom, possibilities, but also fear and anxiety. She showed me her grit when defending her love of the work she does, her resolve to rise above all the negativity in her world and go after her dreams. Her grit is propelling her forward.
Another client has shown grit with her relentless peruse of her passion in her professional beliefs. She has defended herself in negotiations, defended her right to fair pay, defended her vision for equality in her field in every encounter she has had. She has stayed focused on doing good for others, leading by example, and keeping the emotion out of her pursuits.
And there are many more. Here is what I've learned about grit from these amazing women I work with:
Core beliefs and values: Finding your passion using your beliefs and values the key to determining the “why” for grit. It’s knowing what drives you, what lights your fire, and what gives your courage that forms the foundation for grit.
Inner strength: All my clients have an inner strength that drives their grit. it’s the “how” in grit. This strength leads to conviction, resilience and most of all, passion.
Fearlessness and Courage: This shows up as the ability to take on challenges, new things, and take risks.
Unwavering self-confidence: All these women have showed confidence under pressure. confidence in the face of negativity, condescension, and against the odds. when the going gets tough, these women show their grit through immense self-confidence and grace.
Never giving up: Perserverance is key to grit. Stay the course- no matter obstacles or barriers that come up.
I’m honored to witness the grit my clients show every day, and it inspires me to dig deep and find mine. How will you use yours? I can’t wait to see!
