The Power of Ritual: Small Acts, Big Dreams

Are you like me?  I love rituals- those acts we create out of tradition, the acts we look forward to in significant situations.  They can be religious, family, ethnic, and generational.  They bring comfort with their meaning and familiarity.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about rituals in other parts of my life.  Rituals in how I maintain friendships.  Rituals in work, rituals in community.

Even small rituals that I create for myself.  like.... My bedtime rituals of reading and meditating, my work rituals of how I write blogs and cultivate clients, rituals at home for my family like Friday night take out.

Rituals are different from traditions: we inherit traditions, but we create rituals.

With that in mind, I have been developing rituals to help me turn my vision into reality.  here are a few:

  • I get an iced latte when I go write at my favorite coffee shop

  • I light a candle in my office when I am creating something new

  • I do a thought download before I lead my coaching circles, so my mind is clear

  • I take my team out to dinner twice a year as a thank you for all they do for me

  • When I can’t find the right words, I close my eyes and take a few slow deep breathes to relax myself and find the words

Now that I am writing a book, I am finding I need rituals to keep me grounded as I take on this overwhelming project.  Having the right place, the right supplies (that yes, includes a mini-Buddha statue to keep me grounded and focused) the right journal, etc.  It's the little things that make up rituals, and these rituals help me get it done.

So how can you make rituals work for you?  Here are some tips on how to get started:

  • Start small: Pick one area of your life—like your morning, bedtime, or creative time—and choose a tiny act you can repeat with intention.

  • Make it meaningful: Tie your ritual to something that matters to you. Maybe it’s about feeling focused, calm, connected, or grateful.

  • Repeat Regularly: The more consistent with the ritual, the more power it holds. Let it become your rhythm, your pause, your personal check-in.

  • Make it Yours: Don’t worry about what works for others—trust what feels right for you. It could be a cup of tea, a song, a mantra, or a moment of silence.

  • Let it Evolve: Your rituals may shift as your seasons change. That’s okay. Keep what nourishes you and let go of what doesn’t.

Rituals create rhythm. And rhythm creates movement.

When you build rituals around your dreams—like writing every Sunday morning or setting intentions before big meetings—you’re making space for your goals to grow. You’re giving your dreams time, energy, and attention. Rituals help quiet the noise, clear the clutter, and keep you connected to your “why.”

They bring structure to the chaos and consistency to the journey. Little by little, they become the heartbeat of your progress.

What’s one small ritual you could create today to bring a little more peace, focus, or joy into your life—and help you move one step closer to your dreams?
