Are you like me? I have visions of what I want to accomplish, what I want to achieve, and what I want my life to be. I am driven by these. They motivate and inspire me.
But I am also plagued by them. My mind takes me to dark places: it’s overwhelming, I can’t do that, I’m going to fail, it’s too hard. When those thoughts take over, I can procrastinate and buffer, setting me back from success.
I have found that self-accountability is key to my success time and time again. Over the years, I’ve developed skills and tools for holding myself accountable and working through the obstacles that arise along the way. It’s become my pledge and my mantra.
WILL create my own structure and deadlines.
I WILL follow the path with pivoting and flexibility.
I WILL trust and be accountable to my CEO self.
I WILL affirm my “why” daily through reminders and coaching.
I WILL have a productive and efficient work protocol.
I WILL have small rewards and celebrations.
I WILL own my environment and limits.
I WILL consult with my future self regularly.
These statements are hung up in my office as a reminder to what I have committed to. It helps me stay focused on the small, the large and the seemingly impossible. And I can pick and choose the elements I need the most.
For example, if I’m writing a blog, I need the right environment. So, I take myself to a local coffee shop to write. If I complete a proposal that was challenging, I reward myself with buy myself some flowers. If I am doubting a direction or decision, I think about what other CEOs would do to put myself in that frame of mind. I have developed my structure of working and created my own deadlines in my business that meet my needs and keep my productive, on my terms.
This takes commitment and discipline, and I review them regularly to study and adjust. But this list serves me no matter what I am doing or trying to achieve. What will your self-accountability pledge look like? I can’t wait to hear!
